ABOUT//
Manteca was born in the practice rooms of the UKZN Music Dept. as an additional elective class on Authentic Latin Rhythms in 2009. Performing our first gig at the UKZN Centre for Jazz annual Jazz Jol. The band then moved off-campus and into the seedy dance halls of KZN to bring some cultural realness to the local music and salsa dance scene. Manteca has evolved over the years varying between a 13 piece and an 8 piece line up featuring a culturally diverse array of individuals with a passion for the intense rhythmically charged art form of Afro Caribbean music (a fusion itself of European classical and African musical traditions).

The band has featured at many corporate, cultural and sports events around KZN and Gauteng, playing for Nedbank, StandardBank, Unilever, Tysons Property, The Comrades Marathon Green Mile, The EFF’s tribute to Castro and even delved into the theatre with a favorably reviewed scripted and choreographed show at the Rhumbelow Theatre.

The ideology and identity of Manteca is all about fusion and cohesion. We represent a fusion of cultural identities in our music and our diverse band line up. Our music brings all peoples together in dance and rhythm. We love fusing and collaborating with other Artistic and expressive disciplines of Visual Art, Dance, Architecture and Fashion, even inspiring a range of “Manteca Shirts” by renowned SA Fashion Designer Karen Monk-Klijnstra.

We play a heady mix of Salsa, Kizomba, Bachata, Rhumba, ChaCha Afro and Latin Jazz styles and include some traditional repertoire as well as some Popular radio tunes in the Afro-Latino vein together with a few well-loved South African favorites that really get the crowd going. The band is also composing and arranging our own original music to take to the local Festival Scene.

The band features Dr. Raul Vazques (Cuba) on male vocals, Nosihe Zulu (SA) on female vocals, Jose Chemane (Mozambique) on percussion, Daniel Sheldon (Zimbabwe) on Trumpet/Flugel Horn, Avikar Maney (Canada) on Alto Sax/Flute, Avinash Maney (Canada) on keys and guitar, Monks Legette (SA) on Bass and Johan van der Molen (Netherlands) on Tenor Sax.

Look out for a Gig near you and don’t forget your dancing shoes.
